Although it can be tempting to sit back and do nothing during retirement, most people find that having purpose in retirement matters.
Retirement and Purpose
Consider the people you know who are retired. They may be your relatives or they may be your friends.
Which are the ones that seem the most energetic, the most fulfilled?
Likely the ones that have purpose in retirement.
They are the ones who are still engaged in life. They are involved in helping other people, whether it be their family, friends, or their community.
We are fed during our working years by helping others and having purpose. It doesn’t mean everyday is relaxing and stress-free.
It means we are working for something bigger.
Raising and providing for a family.
Challenging ourselves intellectually and physically. T
These things keep us sharp and keep us growing.
Developing friendships that will last for the rest of our life and that enrich us.
Keep Purpose In Retirement
Even if a person has physical ailments when they are older, they can still impact the people around them. They can still be a source of encouragement and advice for them. It doesn’t have to stop when they retire.
How We Retire
Retirement is likely going to look very differently for future generations than it did for the Greatest Generation and the Silent Generation.
The consistent element that likely won’t change regarding what we find attractive about retirement?
Choosing when to work and for how long. That, indeed, is an option that is worth working for.
And, making sure we have purpose in retirement makes the experience that much richer.
